No amount without a story.
As soon as your project starts making money, bookkeeping comes into view: VAT (btw), invoices and a seven-year record-keeping obligation. basestep provides the complete bookkeeping for the sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak). Every amount clicks open to the invoices and entries it comes from. The deal is clear: you file yourself, we calculate and explain. The tax explanation on this page follows Dutch law and is written for Dutch sole proprietorships (eenmanszaak).

Every amount clicks open to the source.
No total you have to take on trust. Behind every amount is the derivation: which boxes, which documents, and where it is in the law. This is what it looks like when you click through.
Amounts and rates: 2026, source Articles 13 and 34g of the Dutch VAT Act (Wet OB 1968), checked on 24 August 2026.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. basestep calculates and explains; you file yourself. If you are unsure about your situation, consult an adviser. All calculations, explanations and signals are calculation support and instruction, not tax or legal advice. Every calculation shows the rates it used and how it was derived. All amounts are estimates based on your own input; the Dutch tax authority (Belastingdienst) sets the assessment. You remain responsible for your own bookkeeping and your tax returns.
You know what to set aside, and what you copy over.
The engine calculates your VAT per return box and gives an estimate of your income tax; the Dutch tax authority (Belastingdienst) sets the assessment. Along the way you see what you should set aside, so the quarter does not take you by surprise.
basestep does not file any return. You copy the boxes into Mijn Belastingdienst (the Dutch tax authority portal) yourself.

What we calculate, and when we refer you on.
With stock, foreign income, rental, more than one business, a complex car situation, exempt supplies or the margin scheme, we refer you to an adviser. We do not guess, and you notice that at the moment it matters.
And for anyone doing this alongside a job: alongside a job, 1,225 hours is usually not achievable; we calculate without the zelfstandigenaftrek (the self-employed deduction), which saves disappointment in May. How that urencriterium (the 1,225-hour test) works is explained in the terms.
You can always export, and the export is yours.
Your bookkeeping is exportable and you take that export with you, also if you stop. The seven-year record-keeping obligation lies with you and not with your software; that is why the export belongs to the product and not to a subscription tier. The XAF audit file is on the roadmap, with the version choice already fixed at 4.0.
Six gaps, reported up front.
An administration page that only tells you what is there tells half the story. This is the other half, and four of these six are worked out in the terms, so you know exactly what the gap means for you.

Receipts are not stored.
You keep your receipts yourself; every entry refers to the document with enough fields to find it again. Read the term bewaarplicht (the record-keeping obligation)
- 02
Boxes 2a, 4a and 4b are not filled in yet.
If you buy a service abroad or domestic reverse charge applies, the engine does not fill in those boxes. What that means is explained in the terms. Read the term verlegde btw (reverse-charged VAT)
- 03
The ICP-opgave (the EU sales listing) and the EU-KOR quarterly report do not exist as documents.
- 04
Hours are only linked to a project.
Time tracking separate from a project does not exist yet. Read the term urencriterium (the 1,225-hour test)
- 05
There is no year-end closing yet.
- 06
The RGS reference codes are not filled in yet.
What those codes do and when you miss them is explained in the terms. Read the term RGS (the Dutch reference chart of accounts)
Also: this is the bookkeeping for the sole proprietorship (the VOF partnership and the BV private limited company are coming), for the years 2025 and 2026, and the export covers your bookkeeping and not your projects or uploads. You can see where everything stands in the planning on the roadmap.
Three places that connect to this.
The terms behind this page, the platform around it, and what it costs.

The platform opens later. Questions or comments can be sent to info@basestep.io.
